Prairie Trail Senior Living is a wood framed structure with 126 senior living apartments located in Ankeny, Iowa. With many large commons spaces on the first floor of the three-story structure, beneath apartments and their structural bearing walls above, the design team was challenged to coordinate stacking bearing walls and locating posts throughout the fist floor space without compromising the architectural open concept or structural necessities. With expansive windows in the apartments, several vaulted two-story interior commons spaces, a second floor covered deck, third floor outdoor space, and attached greenhouse, the goal of creating an open feel within a three story wood structure was achieved.
